Eliot took a more metaphorical and symbolic approach in order to get his message across. With the language being all over the place its hard to figure out what culture the poem is for, though they do say its "the most important and influential American poem of the decade." It's very old school, but modern at the time.
The most obvious observation one may see in the poem is the complex language the author uses. Although there are some dialogue sections that use modern language, the majority of the poem is composed of a more old age French dialect. This may reflect the interests and travels of the author, and the audience he is attempting to reach. Like the language, the style is also unorthodox for the age it was written in. TS Eliot uses fragments of the characters lives to create a seemingly jumbled scene of confusion that represented the world after WW2. We also know that the poem was very different than others during this peticular time period. Unlike the others, Eliot's did not rhyme or create a picture perfect image in the readers mind. Overall the language and style of the poem was very unique for that age.
This poem has a very interesting style. Because it comes from the modernist time period, it takes a modernist approach and is very fragmented. Throughout the poem there are bits of many languages, including French and German. These languages tie in with the fragments, because the whole poem is not written in one language. Eliot also has a lot of symbolism in the poem. For example, the chess board from section two represents seduction and sexual desires.
The style of The Wasteland is very different from other poems. This poem uses fragmentation. Instead of consistently using one topic T.S Eliot pulled in different pieces of topics to create his poem. Although The Wasteland was mainly written in English there are phrases that are written in other languages. T.S Eliot also created his own style instead of using something more common like rhyming.
Eliot's style in my opinion was easy to read. I liked how he broke it up. However, his vocabulary and language was hard to understand. It was totally mind boggling. Reading the poem itself was hard to understand, but if you can read the footnotes, its not as hard. There are multiple different languages. He goes back to the basis of language, including Latin and Greek. He takes quotations from different authors, because he wants to further their themes.
I say that Eliot made his poem very hard to understand for a reason. With the use of a foreign language like the epilogue in the beginning with latin and very sophisticated vocabulary this poem went way over my head. I'm sure it did for about everyone in the class. I think he uses the themes from other stories and quotes to further the meaning and connotations. The style of writing was unlike anything I've seen in my life, it blew my mind. It attracted many readers to read it and try to decipher the meaning of this poem. By tying in other stories and quotes he went in deeper than what he was saying. THE END
TS Eliot's, The Wasteland is not like other poems from its time period. This poem is a modernist poem and is very fragmented, including several other different languages like French and German. Although the speaker changes every passage, it all ties together into one piece. It was written not long after World War I, and it reflects the events occuring in his own life......not finished
The Wasteland is a very difficult poem to understand and comprehend. The use of language and style is on a higher degree then 11th grade. In addition, multiple languages were used through out the poem. The style is an old English method with words spelled the old English way instead of a newer more modern way. The reason Eliot uses foreign languages is to incooperate famous foreign pieces to make allusions to his piece. Latin, Greek and Italian are a few of the foreign languages that are used. This poem destroyed my brain trying to comprehend the style and language but it was all worth it.
..........For example, Eliot had a mental breakdown from the "wasteland" he was experiencing all around him. One of the situations he mentions in the poem are failed marriages. In Section II, A Game Of Chess, Eliot talks about how if Lil doesn't fix her teeth and look pretty for her husband Albert, he'll leave her. "He said, I swear, I can't bear to look at you....He wants a good time, and if you don't give it to him, there's others will." This expresses Eliot's disappointment about what the idea of marriage has become to be. However, Eliot uses a very difficult style to comprehend by bringing in bits and pieces of other literature and characters for instance, the greek prophet Tiresias. Even after looking over the poem a couple times, I'll still have trouble making out what Eliot is trying to say.
After reading the Wasteland, you can tell that Eliot has a different writing style than other authors. First, he brakes the poem down into five sections with titles, that makes the whole section easier to read. When writing, he also uses different languages. He writes some sentences like Frisch weht der Wind, which refers to a song written by Richard Wagner in German. This poem is not a linear poem, you must follow along with the different stanzas and sections.
In this poem the language and style match up with the way the world where he was living was. Eliot wrote this story not long after world war I in Britian where they had just been through death and the perils of war. This was shown by his fragmented images for example the quest of the holy grail. But overall to me the poem was very confusing and i believe him using different languages was to show the world was the same other places and to use the themes of other stories and pieces of work. For example when saying "il miglior fabbro", he was dedicating or you could saying he was giving a thanks to his editor but just saying i would like to thank my editor he said he was the better craftsman by using an italian quote from Dante's Inferno. This poem is very hard for me to understand because of Eliot's writing style.
The style of The Wasteland is very macabre it has a underlying theme of death and decay. Sometimes the situations in the poem are very erie and gruesome. One part I found pretty creepy was the line, "The rattle of bones and chuckle spread from ear to ear." In addition, the style is very disjointed and alludes to many famous texts and stories such as the Bible. This can make understanding the poem difficult because you have to know the backstory and allusions to understand Eliot's message. A line that reflects the fragmented theme is, " A heap of broken images." When I picture the poem I see tons of little pieces thrown together in a deliberate way. Another part of the poem that makes it difficult to understand is the language. It uses French, Latin, German, and many other languages to convey his message. It makes sense that Eliot did this because he had a background with languages so it was probably easy for him to express himself in forms other than English. To me, the poem was extremely difficult to understand because it is very different from anything else I've read. However, I like how he used a ton of little pieces to convey the whole.
I found this poem so interesting when reading because everytime i read it i picked up on more information and hidden meanings. T.S Eliot's style is using metaphors to express his feelings, talking about Madame Sosostris, and Balladonna. He also uses onomatopoeia in his poem such as "twit twit twit jug jug jug jug jug jug". This poem is made up of fragments which is also a distinctive style of his. His use of many different foreign languages and his bits from other stories made his story very hard to read and extremely hard to understand.
The Wasteland is a very modernistic poem that uses other languages like Latin, French, and Greek to show no matter where you are it is a wasteland. The use of all these languages could symbolize that T.S. Eliot feels that America is not the only wasteland. This vast use of different languages also shows his knowing of the world and that he has experienced cultures and there mistakes. He used the book "From Ritual to Romance" which according to Eliot shows the difficulties in his poem. He used several other fragments of other books to further add to the poem.
Eliot's poem, The Wasteland, is very unique with style and language. The landuage is historical as well having allusions. The poem is expressive towards his concerns of the life surrounding him. He expresses his concerns through a poem in ways that are difficult to understand. Whether T.S. Eliot speaks in German or English the poem is very foreign to me either way. My ability to comprehend the poem is very low and I think there is reason for that. Eliot unique voice was used so he can understand the poem without everyone knowing exactly what he is getting at. If Eliot really wanted everyone to know his true feeling he would of preached about it instead he uses a mystery language with an underlying meaning. This type of creativity makes him a great writer.
After reading T.S. Eliot’s, The Wasteland, I noticed that the language and style of his writing is very unique. One thing that was interesting was that he included other languages such as French and German in his writing. I thought this was unnecessary because most people reading his poem don’t understand these languages and similar to me would have no idea what he is talking about. I also realized that Eliot uses a lot of imagery in this poem. In his second story: A Game of Chess, he relates a chess room to the sexuality of a woman. For example, in the line, “ He’s been in the army four years, he wants a good time, And if you don’t give it to him, there’s others will.” He is saying that if the wife in the story does not make herself look good, her husband coming back from the army won’t be attracted to her and will just move on to another women. The last thing I noticed about Eliot's language is that he does not have a rhythmic flow in his writing, and it is more like a story.
The Wasteland by T.S. Eliot is a very complex poem and very unique. The time period that this poem was written in was a modernist period, to which the period of time influenced Eliot's writing style. Modernism is emphasis on the individual and inner being rather than the social being, experimenting with language and a distortion of perception. The poem is distorted and fragmented, switching between different languages an ideas. For example, on line 27, Eliot writes, "And I will show you something different from either, your shadow at morning will stride behind you , or your shadow at evening rising to meet you; I will show you fear in a handful of dust." After this he switches his language into German for a small section that is asking a question. Then it talks about hyacinths, which is a bulbous flower. Eliot is a modernist writer and this distortion of writing, where languages change and ideas are altered. This portrays how Eliot is a modernist writer. Through out the rest of poem Eliot writes in different languages, such as, Latin, French, German, and English. This experimentation of language is a modernist style. Eliot emphasizes on the individual and inner being in this poem. In the section, A Game of Chess, which refers sexual desires, he is relating this failed marriage to him. Eliot was married to a woman who was mentally unstable, which drove him to have a mental breakdown. The failed marriage in the poem is referring back to his failed marriage, which to him is focusing on the individual being and not the social aspect. From what I have observed from The Wasteland I have seen that T.S. Eliot's style is a modernist style, distorting and fragmented the writing, experimenting with languages, and emphasizing on the self being, which all are qualities of a modernist writer.
T.S. Eliot’s style of writing is very unique and is sometimes hard to grasp. He is a very insightful writer that uses a different technique, compared to most other writers. He tends to go on tangents when expressing how he really feels about something, such as love. He also incorporates many languages through out his poem such as Latin, Greek, and German. It was very difficult to follow this poem due to the excessive, random language change and the confusing analogizes he uses.
The words of the poem are not used for the understanding of the readers just aesthetic value. As was said by people he is unique not really, he put a jumble of words together to create this poem. The disorganization conveys a sense of loneliness and uselessness of the human race as a whole.
Observations about the language and style of this poem relate to the perils of this world. The languages of this poem are very viscous, talking about the cruel April month and plants coming from the dead winter ground. His style reminds me of a kind of depression he must be suffering because all he talks about are dead decaying things. Eliot was a very suspicious fellow, he even believed in tarot cards and basically black magic. This shows in the style of his writing because in the poem he just writes about terrible things. He also used foreign languages to contrast a perfect world of love to the selfless lack of love in other societies, while using excerpts from common stories that many people knew the meaning of the story to further enrich the meaning he is trying to portray i The Wasteland. The foreign languages used by Eliot in The Wasteland are diverse to show that many other countries want a perfect world and the authors use these common stories to relate to everything.
The Wasteland is very difficult to comprehend because of the unique language and style Eliot uses throughout the poem. He is constantly changing speakers, location and time. It's as if he doesn't want anyone to comprehend his vision of what he thinks a wasteland is. Eliot also changes languages from English to German to make it even harder to understand. I think that he didn't try to make this poetic he tried to make it confusing. You have to know back round knowledge on things such as Tristan and Isolde, and the Bible. I don’t think this can be classified as a poem, I think it’s just random thoughts, and ideas in Eliot’s head or, “a heap of broken images.”
